CranioCare

Medical helmet for babies

Intro
Cranial deformities in infants are relatively common and can arise from a variety of causes. Early intervention is essential to achieving the best possible outcomes. Our advanced helmet therapy provides a gentle, effective method for correcting cranial asymmetries, supporting healthy development and preventing long-term complications.
Diagnosis

Cranial deformities

There are two primary types of positional cranial deformities in infants. A flattening of the entire back of the head is referred to as brachycephaly, while a flattening on one side is known as plagiocephaly. Mixed forms, where characteristics of both conditions are present, are also relatively common.

Causes and orthotic treatment

These cranial deformities are most often the result of unfavorable head positioning. For example, maintaining a permanent supine position — recommended to reduce the risk of sudden infant death syndrome — can contribute to flattening at the back of the head. Additionally, muscle tension, such as torticollis, or muscular shortening can also lead to one-sided pressure or even cause deformities while still in the womb. With our innovative CranioCare orthosis, we can prevent further deformity and actively correct the skull’s shape. For a better life.

Use of a helmet orthosis

Skull deformities in infants can be partially prevented or minimised by preventive measures such as repositioning and physiotherapy. Deformities that occur before birth cannot be prevented, but can be treated with similar measures. We recommend helmet therapy for particularly severe asymmetric deformities that do not improve. A cranial orthosis can effectively guide the skull’s growth, correcting the deformity. The optimal time to begin therapy is between the 4th and 6th month of life, when the skull is still highly malleable. Starting early maximizes the likelihood of success and can reduce the duration of treatment.

Product benefits
What makes the helmet special

Our CranioCare orthosis is manufactured using the latest standards in additive manufacturing. We use biocompatible materials to ensure the most comfortable and gentle correction of the head shape and achieving the best possible results.

Corrective fit

We produce a customised helmet orthosis for our patients, which is tailored to the respective severity of the cranial deformity and thus reconstructs a natural head shape from an asymmetry.

Gentle use

The particularly lightweight head prosthesis ensures that the correction of the child's skull is as painless and gentle as possible. This allows the baby to concentrate fully on discovering the world around them without any restrictions.

Simple handling

The side fastening system allows the CranioCare to be put on and taken off easily and without restriction for the baby. The helmet orthosis can also be cleaned effortlessly with standard washing-up liquid and warm water. Soiling and sweat residue can be removed quickly and thoroughly.

Treatment
Procedure for helmet therapy
Consultation and analysis
Orthopaedic issues are as individual as the patients themselves. That is why our care always begins with a personal consultation with the parents, followed by a professional analysis of the child’s condition.
Customisation
Using a 3D scan of the head, we create a custom-made helmet for each patient, ensuring the most effective and tailored treatment for the best possible outcome.
Fitting
Once the helmet has been manufactured, we fit it together with the patient and make necessary fine adjustments. A proper fit is essential so that the child can wear the helmet comfortably and without restriction for the period of the treatment plan.
Check-ups and adjustments
We regularly monitor the progress of the treatment, making adjustments as necessary. Thanks to the unique features of CranioCare, we can easily adapt the helmet to accommodate changes as the child’s head shape continues to develop.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
How long will my baby need to wear the helmet?
The duration of helmet therapy depends on the severity of the cranial deformity and the age of your child. Typically, the helmet is worn for 23 hours a day, with one hour for cleaning and bathing the baby. On average, the treatment lasts between four to six months, but the exact duration can vary depending on your child's specific condition.
Are there any side effects or risks associated with helmet therapy?
Helmet therapy is generally well tolerated by infants. While side effects are rare, they may include pressure sores, skin redness, or, in exceptional cases, eczema. These issues are usually resolved by making adjustments to the helmet. Regular cleaning of the helmet and proper scalp care can help prevent skin irritation and ensure comfort during treatment.
How do I look after the helmet properly?
Proper care of the helmet is essential for the success of the therapy and your baby's comfort. The helmet should be removed for about an hour each day and cleaned with a mild detergent and lukewarm water. Allow the helmet to dry completely before putting it back on. Avoid using harsh detergents to prevent skin irritation. During this time, you should also clean your baby's scalp and check for any pressure points that could cause discomfort.
At what level of asymmetry is helmet therapy recommended?
Helmet therapy is usually recommended for more severe head deformities, particularly when conservative measures such as repositioning and physiotherapy have not provided sufficient improvement by the fourth or fifth month of life. The decision to use helmet therapy should always be made in consultation with a specialist who will assess the severity of the deformity and recommend the appropriate treatment.
How much does helmet therapy cost and is it covered by health insurance?
The cost of helmet therapy can vary significantly, typically ranging from €1,800 to €2,500, depending on the provider and the type of helmet used. There is no standard policy for health insurance companies to cover the cost: Some insurance companies cover all or part of the cost, while others may not offer reimbursement.
